This quarter's cash went back to owners, not into growth
Franklin Resources, Plains All American Pipeline, Lifetime Brands, Calumet and Global Partners all sent cash to shareholders or creditors. The message is about what they did not spend it on.

Buybacks, in strong quarters and weak ones
Franklin Resources had a strong quarter and still chose the buyback. The company says it reported preliminary net income of $380.1 million for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, repurchased 2.5 million shares of common stock for $86.1 million during the quarter, and generated $84.1 billion in long-term net inflows for the fiscal year ended September 30, 2026. Total assets under management increased 8% year-over-year to $1.8 trillion. m:…0916
Plains All American Pipeline paid owners directly. The company says it reported third-quarter 2026 net income attributable to PAA of $363 million and Adjusted EBITDA attributable to PAA of $711 million, and declared a quarterly cash distribution of $0.4175 per unit. It also reaffirmed full-year 2026 Adjusted EBITDA guidance of $2.880 billion, plus or minus $50 million. m:…1272
Lifetime Brands went further: it authorised a buyback while reporting a loss. The company says it reported third-quarter 2026 consolidated net sales of $177.7 million, a GAAP net loss of $4.2 million and adjusted net income of $8.4 million, and its board authorised a $20 million share repurchase program. The filing also corrected an omission in the original earnings release, disclosing trailing-twelve-month adjusted EBITDA of $92.4 million for the period ended September 30, 2026. m:…6310
Debt and distributions instead
Calumet chose the creditor over the shareholder. The company says it reported net income of $273.3 million for the third quarter of 2026 and has retired approximately $265 million of debt since July 2026. Its Montana/Renewables segment reported $110.6 million of adjusted EBITDA with tax attributes in the quarter. The debt retirement was specific: on July 15, 2026, Calumet redeemed all outstanding $100 million of its 9.75% Senior Notes due 2028 at 102.438% of principal, and on October 25, 2026, it redeemed a further $150 million of the same notes at the same price. m:…4864
Global Partners LP split the difference, paying owners directly and buying itself flexibility. The company says it reported net income of $52.4 million for the third quarter of 2026, compared with $29.0 million in the prior-year period, and adjusted EBITDA of $122.9 million. It declared a cash distribution of $0.7850 per unit for the period from July 1 through September 30, 2026, and extended its credit agreement maturity date to October 16, 2031. m:…6389
What the spending says
The pattern is not that these companies are flush. It is that they would rather return cash than commit it to new projects. Plains All American Pipeline says balance sheet optimization is expected to generate approximately $60 million of distributable cash flow accretion to common unitholders annually. Lifetime Brands expects to share its capital allocation strategy at an Investor Day on December 1, 2026, which suggests the $20 million authorisation is the start of an argument, not the end of one. m:…1272 m:…6310
Even the strong results come with a caution. Calumet's net income in the third quarter was impacted by a $113.8 million unrealised loss for derivatives and $176.7 million in non-cash items related to renewable identification numbers, the company says, so the headline profit is not the whole story. Franklin Resources maintains $7.4 billion in cash and investments as of September 30, 2026, yet its Western Asset Management unit experienced $11.7 billion of long-term net outflows during the fiscal year. When the good quarter and the bad quarter both end with cash going back to owners, the return is the strategy. m:…4864 m:…0916
What is still unresolved
- How much of Franklin Resources' $7.4 billion in cash and investments will go to further buybacks: the filing summary cites no further repurchase authorisation.
- Whether Calumet's $273.3 million quarterly net income is repeatable, given the $113.8 million derivatives loss and $176.7 million of non-cash renewable-credit items in the same quarter.
- What Lifetime Brands will say about capital allocation at its December 1, 2026 Investor Day.
