Five companies raised their outlooks in a day. One of them lost money
Moderna, Atmus, Bloomin' Brands, Sunstone and Elanco all lifted full-year guidance, pairing the raises with buybacks, dividends and, in one case, a quarterly loss.
- Moderna increased its 2026 expected revenue growth to 15% to 25% after reporting third-quarter revenue of $1.3 billion and net income of $162 million. Self-reported m:…9412
- Atmus raised its full-year 2026 net sales guidance to $2,010 million to $2,035 million and its adjusted EPS guidance to $2.90 to $3.05, and its board authorized a new $300 million share repurchase program on November 4, 2026. Self-reported m:…9513
- Bloomin' Brands raised its full-year 2026 diluted EPS guidance to $1.06 to $1.11 despite reporting a third-quarter diluted loss per share of $0.02. Self-reported m:…6591
- Sunstone Hotel Investors reported net income of $38.7 million for the third quarter of 2026, repurchased $117.8 million of stock in the quarter, and is increasing its full-year 2026 outlook. Self-reported m:…0294
- Elanco raised its full-year 2026 revenue guidance to $5.155 billion to $5.18 billion and its adjusted EPS guidance to $1.17 to $1.20 after third-quarter revenue of $1.265 billion, up 11% year over year. Self-reported m:…5945
The raises
Moderna led with the biggest growth claim. The company says it reported total revenue of $1.3 billion for the third quarter of 2026 and GAAP net income of $162 million, and it increased its 2026 expected revenue growth to 15% to 25%. It also improved its 2026 GAAP research and development expense outlook to approximately $2.7 billion and expects year-end 2026 cash and investments of $8.1 billion to $8.3 billion. The quarter also brought US Food and Drug Administration approval for mFLUSIVA, its seasonal influenza vaccine, and positive Phase 3 results for intismeran autogene in melanoma, presented with Merck. m:…9412
Atmus Filtration Technologies paired its raise with cash returns. The company says it reported third-quarter net sales of $510 million, net income of $61 million, diluted earnings per share of $0.74 and adjusted earnings per share of $0.77, with adjusted EBITDA of $104 million. It raised its full-year 2026 net sales guidance to a range of $2,010 million to $2,035 million and its adjusted earnings per share guidance to $2.90 to $3.05. On November 4, 2026, the board authorized a new $300 million share repurchase program, and the company paid a quarterly cash dividend of $0.06 per share, an increase of 9% from the prior quarter. m:…9513
Elanco Animal Health made the cleanest case of the three. The company says it reported third-quarter revenue of $1.265 billion, an 11% year-over-year increase, with 9% organic constant currency growth, and reported net income of $18 million. It raised its full-year 2026 revenue guidance to $5.155 billion to $5.18 billion and its adjusted EPS guidance to $1.17 to $1.20. It also appointed Jamie Preston as executive vice president and chief people officer, effective November 3, 2026, succeeding Dave Kinard, who intends to retire at the end of 2026, and reported a net leverage ratio of 2.9 times adjusted EBITDA. m:…5945
The odd ones out
Bloomin' Brands raised guidance while losing money in the quarter, which is the most interesting combination of the day. The company says it reported third-quarter total revenue of $944.3 million and a diluted loss per share of $0.02, with an adjusted diluted loss per share of $0.17. Even so, it raised its full-year 2026 diluted EPS guidance to $1.06 to $1.11 and its adjusted diluted EPS guidance to $0.97 to $1.02. At the same time it lowered its full-year 2026 US comparable restaurant sales guidance to 1% to 1.5%, so the higher profit forecast rests on margins and costs rather than on selling more food. m:…6591
The margin story has some support. Bloomin' says its GAAP operating income margin increased to 2.0% in the third quarter of 2026 from a loss of 3.9% in the third quarter of 2025, and it expects fourth-quarter diluted EPS of $0.07 to $0.12. Its chief executive, Mike Spanos, stated that Outback Steakhouse has seen five consecutive quarters of year-over-year improvement in guest scores. A loss in the quarter and a raise for the year only make sense together if the fourth quarter delivers, and the filing puts the fourth-quarter forecast in writing. m:…6591
Sunstone Hotel Investors had the least to explain. The company says it reported net income attributable to common stockholders of $38.7 million for the third quarter of 2026, and that revenue per available room for all hotels in its portfolio increased 11.4% to $235.22. Adjusted funds from operations per diluted share increased 17.6% to $0.20. It repurchased $117.8 million of its common and preferred stock during the quarter, has $310.6 million remaining under its existing repurchase authorization as of November 5, 2026, and is increasing its full-year 2026 outlook on strong third-quarter performance and revised expectations for near-term trends. m:…0294
Five raises in one day, from five different industries, say more about management confidence than about any single sector. Moderna is raising on a product approval, Atmus and Elanco on trading that beat their own plans, Sunstone on rooms filling at higher rates, and Bloomin' on margins improving while sales slow. The common thread is that none of them waited for a better quarter to say so. The test now is whether the fourth quarter, and Bloomin's $0.07 to $0.12 in particular, turns those forecasts into results. m:…9412 m:…9513 m:…5945 m:…0294 m:…6591
What is still unresolved
- Whether Bloomin' Brands delivers fourth-quarter diluted EPS of $0.07 to $0.12 as it expects.
- The path forward for Moderna's norovirus vaccine program and the refiling of mCOFLU in the United States, which the filing leaves open.
- Whether Sunstone's higher room rates and earnings hold if near-term travel trends soften.
