One Hike, Three Holds: The Global Rate Path Splits

The Bank of Canada raised its policy rate to 2.5 percent while the Federal Reserve held and Fiji held, and Korean market rates climbed, leaving no single direction for the end of 2026.

Key facts
  • The Bank of Canada raised its policy interest rate by 25 basis points to 2.5%, with the Bank Rate at 2.75% and the deposit rate at 2.45%. m:…0909
  • The Federal Open Market Committee kept the federal funds rate target range unchanged at 3.75-4%, a decision Hong Kong's HKMA said was in line with market expectations. m:…2636
  • In Korea, the average rate on new deposits rose 24 basis points to 3.45% and on new loans 17 basis points to 4.57% in September 2026. m:…2384
  • The Reserve Bank of Fiji held its Policy Rate at 0.25% while annual headline inflation was 6.8% in September 2026. m:…1899

The hike

The Bank of Canada raised its policy interest rate by 25 basis points to 2.5 percent, with the Bank Rate at 2.75 percent and the deposit rate at 2.45 percent. The Governing Council considered two options, hold or hike, and said the inflation outlook had deteriorated due to persistent war in the Middle East and higher global oil prices. Consumer price inflation is expected to rise to about 3.5 percent by the end of 2026 and remain at or above 3 percent through much of 2027, returning close to the 2 percent target only by the middle of 2028, while the economy is projected to grow by 1 percent in 2026 and about 2 percent in 2027 and 2028. The Bank also said there could be a need to raise the policy rate further, with future decisions made on a meeting-by-meeting basis. m:…0909

The Canadian decision stands out because the same week produced holds elsewhere. The Federal Open Market Committee kept the federal funds rate target range unchanged at 3.75 to 4 percent, a decision Hong Kong's monetary authority said was in line with market expectations, noting the Federal Reserve had indicated economic activity expanding at a strong pace, a stable labor market and inflation remaining elevated. Hong Kong's monetary and financial markets continued to operate in an orderly manner, the HKMA said, while warning that persistent Hong Kong dollar to US dollar interest rate differentials may lead to carry trade activities and that the public should manage interest rate risks carefully around property purchase, investment or borrowing decisions. m:…2636

The quiet tightening

Korea shows a third pattern: market rates rising without a policy announcement in the release. The Bank of Korea reported the average interest rate on new deposits in September 2026 at 3.45 percent, up 24 basis points from the previous month, and on new loans at 4.57 percent, up 17 basis points. Outstanding deposit rates averaged 2.27 percent and outstanding loan rates 4.48 percent. For borrowers, the distinction between a policy hike and a market-rate rise is thin: the cost of new money went up either way. m:…2384

Fiji shows a fourth. The Reserve Bank of Fiji Board maintained its Policy Rate at 0.25 percent, aiming to support economic activity and preserve foreign reserves while managing inflation. Annual headline inflation was 6.8 percent in September 2026 and is expected to remain above 6.0 percent by year-end, yet growth for 2026 is expected to exceed the 1.5 percent forecast, visitor arrivals in the year to September rose 3.7 percent, foreign reserves stood at $4.0 billion, sufficient to cover 5.6 months of retained imports, and financial liquidity stood at $2.1 billion. El Nino poses downside risks for growth in 2027, the bank said. m:…1899

Reading the split

The four decisions do not describe a global turning point; they describe four different constraints. Canada is reacting to an inflation outlook worsened by oil prices, Hong Kong is shadowing a Federal Reserve on hold while watching carry trades, Korea is transmitting higher market rates to depositors and borrowers, and Fiji is holding a near-zero rate through 6.8 percent inflation to protect growth and reserves. A professional mapping the next quarter should therefore track the constraint in each market, not a single global rate call, because the next moves are being set meeting by meeting and, in Korea's case, by the market itself. m:…0909 m:…2636 m:…2384 m:…1899

What is still unresolved

  • Whether the Bank of Canada raises again if inflation stays above 3% through 2027.
  • Whether Hong Kong dollar carry trades intensify if US rates stay on hold.
  • Whether Fiji's reserves cover import needs if El Nino hits 2027 growth.
