Concerts sell, pizza stalls: the consumer split in one earnings week
Live Nation drew 61 million fans while Papa Johns and Wendy's sales fell. BJ's and El Pollo Loco show the split is about execution, not just the consumer.

The big night out still sells
The consumer split widened this week. Live Nation drew 61 million fans to shows in a single quarter, up 19% from a year earlier. Papa Johns saw North American comparable sales fall 8.3%. Wendy's systemwide sales fell 5.9%. The difference is not that consumers stopped spending — it is what they spend on. A scarce night out still sells. The weekly dinner does not. m:…4266 m:…8067 m:…0593
Live Nation reported third-quarter revenue of $10.1 billion, up 19%, with adjusted operating income of $1.18 billion, up 14%. Fan attendance reached 61 million, and international markets accounted for 60% of the growth. The company expects to welcome nearly 180 million fans in 2026 and says ticketing volume for 2027 shows is up double digits. Six Flags tells the other side of the same story. The theme-park operator reported net revenue of $1.17 billion and a net loss of $366.1 million, including $687.7 million of non-cash impairment charges. On a same-park basis, revenue rose 1.4% while attendance slipped 0.2% and per-capita spending rose 1.3% to $60.51. The company is also running a portfolio-wide safety review and cooperating with an investigation into an incident at Six Flags Over Georgia. m:…4266 m:…8311
Dinner is the weak spot
Pizza and burgers had the weaker week. Papa Johns reported revenue of $454.8 million, with North American comparable sales down 8.3% and global system-wide sales down 5.6% to $1.15 billion. Adjusted EBITDA fell to $38.1 million from $47.8 million a year earlier. The company introduced a plan called Unbox Better to strengthen the brand and its franchise system. Wendy's reported revenue of $547.0 million and net income of $15.1 million, with global systemwide sales down 5.9% and US same-restaurant sales down 5.7%. It launched a multi-year strategy called Dave's Way and signed a letter of intent to acquire up to 163 restaurants from Meritage Hospitality Group, a deal that still needs a definitive agreement and court approval. The company says its breakfast strategy could unlock up to $200 million in restaurant-level EBITDA. m:…8067 m:…0593
The exceptions prove the rule
The exceptions show the split is about execution, not just demand. BJ's Restaurants reported revenue of $358.6 million, with comparable restaurant sales up 8.1% and restaurant-level operating margin up to 14.7% from 12.5%. Adjusted EBITDA rose 48.6% to $31.4 million, and the company raised full-year guidance. El Pollo Loco reported revenue of $126.3 million, with system-wide comparable sales up 5.0%, though net income slipped to $6.9 million. It plans to open 25 to 30 new restaurants in 2027. Portillo's reported revenue of $194.1 million and net income of $4.8 million, but it plans to close a mid-to-high single-digit number of underperforming restaurants outside the Chicago area, mostly in the fourth quarter, and expects material cash and non-cash charges from the closures. m:…3267 m:…8185 m:…4762
United Parks and Resorts, the SeaWorld operator, sits in the middle. Revenue was $506.5 million and attendance fell 4.7% to 6.5 million guests, but total revenue per guest rose 3.8% to $78.29 and in-park spending per guest hit a record $37.39. Net income fell 10.5% to $80.0 million. Management blamed unfavorable weather, calendar effects and weaker international visitation. m:…2429
What to watch
The pattern across the filings is consistent. Operators that control a scarce experience can raise prices and fill seats. Operators selling a routine meal face customers who trade down or stay home, and the response is portfolio surgery: close the weak sites, buy back the franchisee's restaurants, rebrand the marketing. The question for the next quarter is whether the strong names — BJ's, El Pollo Loco, Live Nation — can hold their traffic when the weak ones stop discounting to keep theirs. m:…4266 m:…3267 m:…8185 m:…4762
What is still unresolved
- Whether Papa Johns' Unbox Better plan stabilizes North American comparable sales, and on what timeline.
- Whether Wendy's reaches a definitive agreement for the Meritage restaurants and wins court approval.
- The outcome of the investigation into the incident at Six Flags Over Georgia.
