Boards authorised $1.7 billion in new buybacks this week, and the money is coming from cash, not hope
Planet Fitness and Cirrus Logic each authorised $500 million. Rayonier, Enovis and Prospect Capital added $700 million more between them. Gulfport expanded its programme by a third, to $2 billion.

The tally
Five boards authorised new share repurchase programmes this week, worth $1.7 billion between them. Planet Fitness and Cirrus Logic each authorised $500 million. Rayonier approved $300 million. Enovis and Prospect Capital each approved $200 million. Gulfport Energy went further in a different way, expanding its existing authorisation by 33% to $2.0 billion. m:…3559 m:…1859 m:…7923 m:…8768 m:…8699 m:…2458
The timing is the story. These are not programmes announced alongside soaring results alone. They arrive in a quarter where several of the same companies are also cutting deals, reshaping portfolios and, in one case, reporting a net loss. The boards are choosing to return cash while they still have it, rather than waiting for a cleaner quarter. m:…3559 m:…7923 m:…8699
Where the money comes from
Planet Fitness reported third-quarter revenue of $360.0 million, up 9.0% from a year earlier, with adjusted EBITDA of $146.2 million against $140.8 million a year earlier. Net income was $52.0 million. The board authorised the new $500 million programme to replace its 2025 programme, and the company repurchased about 1.0 million shares for $50.0 million during the quarter. It also acquired Be-Fit, a Portuguese fitness platform with 25 clubs, for about 102.5 million euros, and opened 33 new clubs, taking its system-wide total to 2,962. m:…3559
Cirrus Logic reported revenue of $559.5 million for the second quarter of fiscal 2027, with GAAP earnings of $2.23 a share and non-GAAP earnings of $2.70 a share. The board authorised up to an additional $500 million of repurchases in October 2026. The company says the quarter was driven mainly by strong demand and increased content shipping into smartphones, and it expects third-quarter revenue of $510 million to $570 million. m:…1859
Rayonier reported third-quarter net income of $123.3 million and adjusted EBITDA of $144.6 million, and its board approved a $300 million programme after the company repurchased $59.8 million of shares in the quarter. The timberland owner also completed a $145 million disposition of about 36,000 acres in Washington and a $146 million acquisition of about 57,000 acres in Texas and Alabama. Enovis reported third-quarter net sales of $559 million and adjusted EBITDA of $104 million, raised its full-year adjusted EBITDA guidance to $428 million to $438 million, and won approval for a $200 million programme to replace a $100 million one. m:…7923 m:…8768
The outlier
Prospect Capital is the outlier in the group. The business development company authorised a $200 million repurchase programme while reporting a net loss of $53.448 million for the quarter, against net investment income of $76.359 million. It also declared monthly distributions of $0.035 a share for November 2026 through January 2027, completed the sale of Valley Electric for about $328 million on July 1, 2026, and signed an agreement to sell its stake in RGIS Services for about $22 million. Gulfport Energy, meanwhile, reported net income of $96.4 million and adjusted EBITDA of $226.5 million, and expanded its authorisation by 33% to $2.0 billion after completing $83.0 million of Ohio land lease acquisitions. m:…8699 m:…2458
What the wave means
A buyback is a board saying it has no better use for the cash than its own shares. Five boards said that in the same week, across gyms, chips, timber, medical devices, energy and a lender. That breadth is the point. The decision is not about one sector's confidence. It is about cash piling up faster than new projects can absorb it, at least in the companies reporting this week. m:…3559 m:…1859 m:…7923 m:…8768 m:…8699 m:…2458
The test is what happens next. Authorisations are not purchases. Planet Fitness spent $50 million in the quarter. Rayonier spent $59.8 million. Whether the rest of the $1.7 billion gets spent, and at what prices, will show in the next two quarters of filings. The programmes are promises, not proof. m:…3559 m:…7923
What is still unresolved
- How much of the $1.7 billion in new authorisations will actually be spent, and over what period.
- Whether Prospect Capital's repurchase programme can be funded while it reports net losses.
- The closing date for Prospect Capital's RGIS Services stake sale, which is pending regulatory approvals.
