Baseball's awards week doubled as a pricing exercise

MVP, Cy Young and Rookie of the Year finalists were named as clubs put dollar figures on keeping their own players. The two lists, read together, show how the sport values a season.

Key facts
  • Witt Jr., Yordan Alvarez and Junior Caminero are the finalists for the 2026 American League MVP award. m:…2452
  • Pete Crow-Armstrong, Shohei Ohtani and Brice Turang are the finalists for the 2026 National League MVP award. m:…6653
  • The Brewers picked up Contreras' $15.5 million club option for 2027 and extended a $23.15 million qualifying offer to Bauers. m:…5480
  • The Mariners extended a $23.15 million qualifying offer to Arozarena, who has until November 17 to accept or decline. m:…0722
  • Cam Schlittler, Dylan Cease and Parker Messick are the finalists for the 2026 American League Cy Young award. m:…3838

Two MVP races, two different cases

The American League MVP race, as narrowed by the Baseball Writers' Association of America, pits Witt Jr. against Yordan Alvarez and Junior Caminero. Witt Jr. led the American League in wins above replacement, stole 45 bases and recorded 24 outs above average, the most among major league shortstops. Alvarez led the league in batting average at .316, on-base percentage at .432, slugging percentage at .601 and OPS at 1.033, and he set a club record with 33 intentional walks. The contrast is the point: one case rests on all-around value and defence, the other on the most complete offensive season in the league. m:…2452 m:…1138

The National League race has a similar tension, with a different favourite. Pete Crow-Armstrong led the majors with 10.6 fWAR, hit 45 home runs and became the first Cubs player to reach at least 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in one season. His walk rate rose from 4.5 percent in 2025 to 11.4 percent in 2026, and his fielding run value set a Statcast-era record for an outfielder in one season. Shohei Ohtani, the other headline finalist alongside Brice Turang, posted an .889 OPS with 30 home runs while pitching to an 8-2 record with a 1.79 ERA in 14 starts, before a left knee injury ended his pitching after July 3. m:…6653 m:…4922

Ohtani's case is notable for its durability as much as its production. He has been an MVP finalist in six consecutive seasons and has won four career MVP awards, while the Dodgers' account notes he was the club's only player to finish in the top three for any of the five writers' awards. That context does not settle the 2026 vote, which will be announced on November 12, but it explains why a season interrupted by knee and biceps problems still ends in the final three. m:…4922 m:…6653

The pitching and rookie races

The American League Cy Young finalists tell a story about first impressions and expensive ones. Cam Schlittler went 14-6 in his first full major league season with a league-best 1.95 ERA, 239 strikeouts and 6.2 pitching WAR, the third-lowest ERA in Yankees franchise history by a qualified pitcher. Dylan Cease, in the first year of a seven-year, $210 million contract with Toronto, posted a 2.40 ERA with 239 strikeouts over 169 innings, while teammate Louie Varland is a finalist for Reliever of the Year after a 1.27 ERA with 97 strikeouts and 35 saves. Parker Messick completes the Cy Young trio. m:…3838 m:…7361

The rookie race is quieter but follows the same pattern of a slow start followed by a strong finish. Benge, the Mets' National League Rookie of the Year finalist, is the first Mets rookie to steal 20 bases and hit 20 home runs, and he recorded 4.3 bWAR. After May 3, when his OPS stood at .498, he hit .302 with a .366 on-base percentage and .462 slugging percentage, adding 20 doubles, 18 home runs and 16 steals. He is joined by Cincinnati's Sal Stewart, who finished with 32 home runs and 112 RBIs, and St. Louis' JJ Wetherholt, who recorded 4.5 bWAR. The winner will be announced on November 9, two days before the Cy Young and Reliever of the Year winners. m:…4015

Read together, these lists reward seasons that changed shape mid-year. Alvarez's intentional-walk record suggests opponents decided pitching to him cost too much. Benge adjusted after early May. Schlittler arrived fully formed. Voting will compress all of that into one name per award, but the finalist lists record what the writers noticed. m:…1138 m:…4015 m:…3838

The other price list

While the writers named finalists, clubs were putting prices on retention. The Brewers picked up Contreras' $15.5 million club option for 2027 after a season in which he hit .270 with 18 home runs and 94 RBIs, and they extended a one-year, $23.15 million qualifying offer to Bauers, who has until November 17 to accept or reject it. The Mariners extended the same $23.15 million qualifying offer to Arozarena after a career-high 5.5 wins above replacement, with the same November 17 deadline. The identical figure is the qualifying-offer number, used to force a decision and position clubs for draft-pick compensation if the player leaves. m:…5480 m:…0722

The rest of the roster churn shows the same logic at smaller scale. The Brewers declined options on Gary Sánchez and Antonio Senzatela, while the Giants cut nine players to return to a 40-man roster, reinstated 15 players from the 60-day injured list, and saw several departing players claimed off waivers, including José Buttó by the Rangers. The Giants also declined an $800,000 club option for Rowan Wick, who remains under club control and eligible for arbitration. Prospects must be added to the 40-man roster by November 17 to avoid Rule 5 Draft eligibility, which is why so much of this activity lands in the same week. m:…5480 m:…2915

The implication for professionals watching the sport is that awards week is also a market week. A finalist nod raises a player's profile just as his club, or another club, must decide what that profile is worth in a contract. The qualifying offer, the club option and the waiver claim are three different ways of answering the same question: how much of next season's budget should one player's last season command? The answers, due by November 17 for qualifying offers, will shape the winter more than the award announcements themselves. m:…5480 m:…0722 m:…2915

What is still unresolved

  • Who wins each award when the announcements land on November 9, 11 and 12.
  • Whether Bauers and Arozarena accept or reject their qualifying offers by November 17.
  • Whether the Brewers receive compensation if Bauers rejects the offer and signs elsewhere for $50 million or more, as the club's account describes.
