Smaller banks grew their balance sheets, then one-off costs decided the quarter
Hawthorn, Red River and Financial Services reported solid third-quarter profits while Pioneer and Richmond Mutual showed how litigation, merger costs and credit provisions can overwhelm otherwise growing lending businesses.
- Hawthorn Bancshares reported third-quarter 2026 net income of $7.1 million, or $1.01 per diluted share, and said loan and deposit growth was primarily attributed to its acquisition of FSC Bancshares. Self-reported m:…0747
- Red River Bancshares reported quarterly net income of $12.6 million, or $1.90 per diluted share, for the third quarter of 2026. Self-reported m:…8075
- Pioneer Bancorp reported net income of only $85,000 for the three months ended September 30, 2026, after recognizing a $6.2 million litigation-related expense. Self-reported m:…0635
- Richmond Mutual Bancorporation reported net income of $1.7 million for the third quarter of 2026, with a $6.1 million provision for credit losses and $3.0 million of nonrecurring merger-related expenses in noninterest expense. Self-reported m:…9397
- Financial Services Corp. reported net income of $19.1 million, or $1.90 per diluted share, for the three months ended September 30, 2026, with total loans of $4.4 billion and total deposits of $4.7 billion. Self-reported m:…5665
The split in one quarter
Five smaller banks reported third-quarter 2026 results in the same filing window, and the headline profits point in different directions. According to its filing, Hawthorn Bancshares reported net income of $7.1 million, or $1.01 per diluted share. Red River Bancshares reported net income of $12.6 million, or $1.90 per diluted share, and Financial Services Corp. reported net income of $19.1 million, also $1.90 per diluted share. At the other end, the company says Pioneer Bancorp reported net income of just $85,000 for the three months ended September 30, 2026, and Richmond Mutual Bancorporation reported net income of $1.7 million for the third quarter of 2026. m:…0747 m:…8075 m:…5665 m:…0635 m:…9397
The gap is not explained by a collapse in lending income at the weaker banks. Pioneer reported net interest income of $23.6 million for the quarter, an increase of 16.9% from the prior-year period, and a net interest margin of 4.26%, up 10 basis points from the prior-year period. Richmond Mutual completed a merger during the quarter that sharply increased its balance sheet. The filings therefore describe a quarter in which growth arrived, but costs tied to deals, litigation and credit absorbed much of it at two banks. m:…0635 m:…9397
Acquisitions did the growing
Hawthorn attributes its balance-sheet growth directly to a deal. The company says loans held for investment increased by $273.8 million, or 19.3%, compared with the prior quarter, and deposits increased by $302.8 million, or 20.3%, compared with the prior quarter, with the growth primarily attributed to the acquisition of FSC Bancshares. Its net interest margin on a fully taxable equivalent basis improved to 4.41% in the third quarter, and adjusted net income was $8.6 million, above the reported $7.1 million. The company also reported a total risk-based capital ratio of 14.29% and non-performing assets to total loans of 0.59% at September 30, 2026. m:…0747
Richmond Mutual shows the same mechanism at a larger scale. The company says it completed its merger with Farmers Bancorp on July 1, 2026, and total assets reached $2.60 billion at September 30, 2026, compared with $1.55 billion at June 30, 2026. It also recognized a preliminary bargain purchase gain of $1.6 million from the acquisition. Pioneer, which completed its acquisition of Targeted Lending Co. on April 24, 2026, reported net loans receivable of $1.94 billion at September 30, 2026, up 17.6% from December 31, 2025, and deposits of $2.13 billion, up 22.5% from December 31, 2025. m:…9397 m:…0635
One-off costs set the bottom line
Pioneer's profit collapse traces to a single line item. The company says it recognized a $6.2 million litigation-related expense in the third quarter of 2026 and reached agreements in principle to resolve litigation with Southwestern Payroll Services, Granite Solutions Groupe and National Payment Corp. Thomas Amell stated that the resolution removes a long-standing source of uncertainty for Pioneer Bancorp, according to the filing. The filing does not say the agreements are final, so the $85,000 result reads as a quarter interrupted by a legal bill rather than a quarter in which the lending business shrank. m:…0635
Richmond Mutual's pressure came from two directions at once. The company says its provision for credit losses totaled $6.1 million during the third quarter, including a partial charge-off of $4.5 million on a nonaccruing commercial real estate loan, and noninterest expense included $3.0 million of nonrecurring merger-related expenses. Those two items together exceed its $1.7 million of net income, which is why a merger that expanded assets to $2.60 billion still produced a smaller profit. The bank also said it elected to begin reporting its regulatory capital status through the Community Bank Leverage Ratio framework effective September 30, 2026. m:…9397
The steadier results
Red River's quarter had no comparable one-off item in its filing. The company says net interest income was $29.9 million for the third quarter, an increase of 3.2% from the second quarter of 2026, with total assets of $3.37 billion, total deposits of $2.96 billion and loans held for investment of $2.32 billion at September 30, 2026. It expects to open new banking centers in Acadiana and Slidell in the first quarter of 2027, and its 2026 stock repurchase program had $10.0 million of available capacity at September 30, 2026. Nonperforming assets did increase to $5.6 million, a figure worth watching even inside a record-profit quarter. m:…8075
Financial Services Corp. reported the largest profit of the five, with total loans rising to $4.4 billion and total deposits to $4.7 billion at September 30, 2026, a fully taxable equivalent net interest margin of 3.80% and nonperforming assets of $10.3 million. Taken together, the five filings suggest a useful distinction for readers of bank results: balance-sheet growth shows whether a bank is getting bigger, while litigation, merger and credit items show what that growth actually earned in the quarter. m:…5665
What is still unresolved
- Whether Pioneer's agreements in principle to resolve litigation close on the terms described, and whether further litigation costs follow.
- Whether Richmond Mutual's $6.1 million credit provision, including the commercial real estate charge-off, marks the end of that credit pressure or the start of more.
- Whether the acquisition-driven loan and deposit growth at Hawthorn, Pioneer and Richmond Mutual continues once the acquired balances are fully absorbed.
- Whether Red River's increase in nonperforming assets to $5.6 million continues in the next quarter.
