Crypto's Two Trust Machines Broke in the Same Week

A $91m hardware-wallet implant heist showed the physical layer cannot be audited away; Papertrade did $1.11T in five days with revenue from trader losses only; and digital-asset treasuries hold at least 1.073m BTC.

Key facts
  • Ledger is investigating the theft of roughly $91 million from customers who bought hardware wallets through CryptoBilis; at least one tampered device carried a hardware implant that read the recovery phrase off the screen, and about $80 million — 88% of the total — moved out of 474 victim addresses in a single hour starting 05:00 UTC on Oct. 9. m:…2676
  • Ledger's Genuine Check passes on tampered units because the implant leaves the Secure Element and operating system untouched; as of Oct. 15 about $56.6 million remained at attacker-controlled addresses, and Tether has frozen $10 million of USDT tied to the theft. m:…2676
  • Papertrade, which opened on HyperEVM on October 10, 2026, offers up to 1,000x leverage on BTC and ETH perpetuals; as of Oct. 15 it had processed $1.11 trillion in volume with total trader PnL of -$54.1 million, and its revenue is derived entirely from trader losses. m:…8179
  • Papertrade's cumulative revenue reached $43 million after five days, per DefiLlama data; a manipulator address already exploited a design weakness by moving the Hyperliquid ETH reference price, prompting the team to tighten open-interest caps onchain and at the relayer level. m:…8179
  • Digital asset treasury companies hold at least 1.073 million BTC, with MicroStrategy accounting for 848,500 of them and Metaplanet, Twenty One, and Strive collectively holding approximately 120,000. m:…7912
  • The same week, Bitget lost $387.5 million on Sept. 24 from a compromised third-party security product, a Liquid software bug allowed an attacker to mint about 3,998 unbacked L-BTC, and vendor and developer-tooling losses accounted for 77% of third-quarter crypto losses. m:…2676

The wallet you could hold was the wallet you couldn't verify

The hardware wallet was supposed to be the one part of crypto you could trust by physics: the keys never leave the device, the screen shows what you sign, the supply chain is clean. This week that model took a direct hit. Ledger is investigating the theft of roughly $91 million from customers who bought hardware wallets through CryptoBilis, a Southeast Asia reseller, after at least one tampered device was found carrying a hardware implant that read the recovery phrase off the screen and transmitted it over LTE through a provisioned eSIM. The cruel detail is in the engineering: the implant leaves the Secure Element and operating system untouched, so Ledger's own Genuine Check passes on tampered units. m:…2676

The exfiltration was industrial in pace. Roughly $91 million left 474 victim addresses across bitcoin, Ethereum, Arbitrum, Polygon, and TRON, and 88% of the stolen value — about $80 million — moved in a single hour starting at 05:00 UTC on Oct. 9. As of Oct. 15, about $56.6 million remained at attacker-controlled addresses, with Tether having frozen $10 million of USDT tied to the theft. The lesson for anyone running a custody program is uncomfortable: the attack surface is not the chip or the firmware, it is the box the wallet arrives in, and no software attestation can vouch for the cardboard. m:…2676

The casino that pays you to lose

While the Ledger heist was a failure of trust, Papertrade is a redesign of it. The onchain protocol opened trading on HyperEVM on October 10, 2026, offering up to 1,000x leverage on BTC and ETH perpetuals with no funding rates and no slippage. Its economic design is stated without euphemism: trades are swaps against the Martingaler LP, which is funded only by trader losses, and Papertrade's revenue is derived entirely from trader losses. Losing trades mint non-transferable PAPER tokens that can be staked for a share of realized PnL and fees. m:…8179

The numbers are startling either way you read them. As of Oct. 15, five days after launch, Papertrade had processed $1.11 trillion in total volume while total trader PnL sat at -$54.1 million; cumulative revenue stood at $43 million after five days, with over 99% of the 8.07 billion PAPER supply staked and $45.6 million in staking rewards claimed. The venue also demonstrated its own fragility on the way up: a manipulator address exploited a design weakness by moving the Hyperliquid ETH reference price to profit from synthetic exposure, and the team responded by tightening open-interest caps onchain and at the relayer level. The incentives are legible even to a first-year finance student — when the house's income is the players' losses, every design choice is a conflict of interest wearing a token. m:…8179

The hoarders in the middle

Between the broken wallet and the adversarial casino sits the institutional bid. Digital asset treasury companies now hold at least 1.073 million BTC, with MicroStrategy alone accounting for 848,500 of them and Metaplanet, Twenty One, and Strive collectively holding approximately 120,000. The treasury-company trade converts corporate balance sheets into leveraged crypto exposure: the equity becomes the instrument, the bitcoin becomes the narrative, and the shareholders become the liquidity. That structure looks sturdy in a rising market and brittle in a week like this one, when the infrastructure beneath the asset keeps producing novel failure modes. m:…7912

The backdrop is not a quiet one. Third-quarter tallies from CertiK and Hacken estimate crypto losses between $1.1 billion and $1.3 billion, and the week's other entries — Bitget's $387.5 million loss on Sept. 24 from a compromised third-party security product, a Liquid software bug that let an attacker mint about 3,998 unbacked L-BTC, Coldcard firmware that generated weak seeds since 2021 and cost more than 1,830 BTC — show losses arriving from every layer of the stack at once. Trust in crypto was always a portfolio of small trusts: in the hardware, the venue, the tokenomics, the auditor. This week, several of those positions went to zero simultaneously. m:…2314

What the trust audit leaves open

For the professionals deciding what to do about it, the questions are practical rather than philosophical. Hardware procurement now needs a supply-chain policy, not just a firmware policy: buy direct, verify the reseller, and assume the box is hostile. Treasury teams holding bitcoin through public companies are pricing counterparty risk in the wallet vendor and the exchange as well as in the asset. And onchain venues with adversarial economics need to be read as what they are — market structures whose revenue line is your loss line — rather than as neutral infrastructure. The industry's trust machines did not fail because the cryptography was wrong. They failed because the trust was placed in the parts the cryptography never covered. m:…2676

What is still unresolved

  • How much of the $56.6 million at attacker-controlled addresses is recoverable through chain analysis and exchange freezes
  • Whether resellers beyond CryptoBilis distributed tampered Ledger devices
  • Whether Papertrade's loss-funded model survives its first sustained volatility event without further manipulation
  • How digital-asset treasury companies value their BTC holdings if exchange or custody failures impair liquidity
