## Key facts

- Databricks says agentic reasoning becomes less reliable at zip-code or city-block granularity without a semantic layer. (self-reported) [cites: 1793702367167661148]
- Databricks reports spatial joins running up to 17x faster than on classic clusters running Apache Sedona. (self-reported) [cites: 1793702367167661148]
- Fractal's Lakebase Agentic RAG architecture on Azure combines Databricks notebooks, Lakebase Search, Genie Agent and OpenAI generation. (self-reported) [cites: 1793700006912408292]
- Clay's Account Agent surfaced a deal-threatening procurement deadline in every run, against 60% for a general-purpose agent connected via MCP. (self-reported) [cites: 1793676487621904905]

## The granularity problem

Databricks describes a specific failure mode for its Genie Agent: left to make geospatial decisions on its own, an agent can be accurate at the level of a country or region, because that coarse knowledge is well represented in the training data of the underlying language model, but at the level of zip codes or city blocks, agentic reasoning can become less reliable, and the agent needs a semantic layer to stay dependable. [cites: 1793702367167661148]

The fix Databricks proposes has three parts: pair an interactive map with the Genie Agent so a map click supplies a precise location as coordinates rather than free text, break questions into atomic functions, and define a rigid composition that specifies the order of those functions. Genie cannot see a function body, Databricks notes, so it relies on each function's description and parameter comments to decide which one to call and what to pass in, which makes metadata management part of agent reliability. [cites: 1793702367167661148]

The underlying data layer is built for that workload: spatial SQL supports GEOMETRY and GEOGRAPHY column types, with more than 80 ST_ functions such as ST_Distance, ST_Contains, ST_Intersects and ST_DWithin running directly in SQL. Databricks reports spatial joins running up to 17x faster than on classic clusters running Apache Sedona, and Lakehouse//RT running geospatial queries up to 38x faster than a traditional cloud data warehouse at high concurrency. ## The enterprise version of the same argument

Fractal Analytics describes a Lakebase Agentic RAG architecture on Azure built for a different version of the same problem: enterprise questions are difficult to answer when the evidence is scattered across documents, databases, spreadsheets and exports. Its flow connects data preparation, semantic retrieval, agentic reasoning, language generation, application delivery and automated deployment in one governed flow. [cites: 1793700006912408292]

Azure Databricks notebooks form the processing engine, ingesting source systems and converting raw content into searchable knowledge through extraction, cleaning, chunking, embedding generation and indexing. Lakebase Search provides semantic search, vector similarity search, metadata filtering and fast retrieval; the Genie Agent acts as the intelligence layer, understanding intent, reasoning across multiple steps, using search tools and data sources, and maintaining conversational context; OpenAI models provide response generation. [cites: 1793700006912408292]

Databricks Apps provides the application layer, receiving a question, retrieving context from Lakebase Search, building prompts and enforcing authentication and authorisation, while Azure DevOps CI/CD supplies source control, automated testing, build pipelines and production deployment. Anchoring generation in retrieved evidence helps reduce hallucination risk, Fractal says, and it recommends starting with a focused pilot around one business question. [cites: 1793700006912408292]

## Measured, not asserted

Clay tested the claim rather than asserting it. In a test built from five synthetic accounts sized like real enterprise accounts, each with a six-person buying group, three opportunities, 31 contacts, about 10 emails and up to 16 Gong calls, Clay's Account Agent surfaced a deal-threatening procurement deadline in every run, while a general-purpose agent connected to Salesforce and Gong via MCP caught it in only 60% of runs. [cites: 1793676487621904905]

The ceiling on your GTM agent is the data, not the model, Clay argues. On account history, the filesystem-style approach scored 92 out of 100 for quality against 82 for typed tools, though Clay notes typed tools held their own on narrow questions where answers sit in known fields such as deal stage. [cites: 1793676487621904905]

The three accounts converge on one practical rule. Give an agent a resolved, governed, browsable view of the data, whether that is a spatial semantic layer, a governed retrieval pipeline or a unified account folder, and the same model answers better. Give it raw access and leave it to resolve duplicates, find custom fields and organise the account on every question, and the extra tokens and time go there instead of into the answer. [cites: 1793702367167661148, 1793700006912408292, 1793676487621904905]

## What is still unresolved

- Databricks' geospatial post is Part 1; the full competitor-intelligence workflow is deferred to Part 2.
- Clay's comparison rests on synthetic accounts it constructed, not on customer production data.
- Fractal's architecture description does not include measured accuracy or latency results from a production deployment.

## Decision card

- **Useful for:** Developers building agents over enterprise or geospatial data; Teams deciding between MCP access and a purpose-built data layer
- **Not for:** Teams choosing a foundation model on benchmark scores alone
- **Compare against:** Clay's filesystem-style retrieval for account research; Fractal's governed RAG flow for fragmented enterprise data

## Run these Manifests yourself

Every Manifest cited here can be read in full with your own Synorb Key. Check the claims before you rely on them.

1. **Get a Synorb Key.** Click Generate Free Agent Key at https://synorb.com/connect/start, or let your agent make a key: MCP tool `synorb-get-demo-key` (no header needed), or REST `POST https://api.synorb.com/api/connect/demo-key` with a JSON body such as `{"client":"your-agent-name"}`. The key is the `api_key` field of the answer. Save the key. The 72 Hour Agent Demo key needs no email. It lasts 72 hours and can pull up to 25 Manifests. It includes 5 Beacons; all of them are starter Beacons.
2. **Read each cited Manifest by id.** REST: `GET https://api.synorb.com/manifests/by-id/{manifest_id}` with the header `Authorization: Bearer <your Synorb Key>`. Ids are strings; do not parse them as numbers. The reply holds the source, the Signal (claims) and the Brief.
3. **Check the claim.** Match each sentence in the story to the claims in the Manifest it cites. The claim ids in the ledger point to them.
