## Key facts

- Host identity dominated mycorrhizal community structure in afforestation, while soil inoculation barely moved conifer communities. (self-reported) [cites: 1793188466346662396]
- Soil DNA was an unreliable proxy for root-associated mycorrhizal symbiosis in carbon removal monitoring. (self-reported) [cites: 1793188466346662396]
- Fog adaptation in the Gaviota tarplant was polygenic, involving cell wall remodeling, osmoregulation and developmental timing. (self-reported) [cites: 1793207598127860500]
- Field sensing predicted three-dimensional soil moisture dynamics with an R squared of 0.83. (self-reported) [cites: 1793226592599289997]

## The nursery decides the fungi

In a preprint field-scale study of afforestation under carbon removal interventions, host identity was the dominant factor structuring mycorrhizal communities. Soil inoculation had minimal effect on conifer ectomycorrhizal community composition, at 3 percent variation, and no effect on broadleaves. Basalt amendment for enhanced rock weathering did not alter mycorrhizal composition, diversity or colonization. [cites: 1793188466346662396]

Root-associated ectomycorrhizal communities shared more taxa with tree nurseries than with donor soil inoculum, and soil DNA analysis was an unreliable proxy for root-associated symbiosis in carbon removal monitoring. The practical message is blunt: if the goal is a functioning root partnership, manage the nursery stage, and do not trust soil DNA alone to prove the partnership exists. [cites: 1793188466346662396]

## Stomata tuned by genotype

A second preprint identified 15 EPF and EPFL signaling peptide family members in tomato and tested their response to drought, heat and combined stress. SlEPF8 was strongly induced under drought and combined stress in the Money Maker genotype, while the Ailsa Craig genotype showed broader transcriptional activation of SlEPF genes under heat and combined stress compared with Money Maker. Stomata are the leaf pores that balance water loss against carbon gain, and these peptides help regulate their development. The genotype difference matters for breeding: the same stress does not produce the same regulatory response in every variety, so a heat-tolerant and a drought-tolerant line may need different genetic targets even when the field problem looks similar. [cites: 1793188466346331933]

## Fog, roots and a desiccation genome

A third preprint studied the endangered Gaviota tarplant, whose coastal fog is a critical water source. Fog adaptation was polygenic, involving cell wall remodeling, osmoregulation and developmental timing, and a centromere-associated haplotype was strongly associated with long-term fog and early-season germination. Wind farm infrastructure in the plant range was associated with non-directional gene flow patterns. [cites: 1793207598127860500]

A fourth preprint addressed the measurement side for crops. Electromagnetic induction sensing combined with artificial neural network inversion modeling predicted three-dimensional soil moisture dynamics with an R squared of 0.83. Electromagnetic induction-derived crop water use showed a significant positive correlation with root length density in non-water-stressed soil depths. Narrower row spacing promoted deeper rooting depth by flowering, while wider row spacing promoted greater post-flowering root growth and water use. [cites: 1793226592599289997]

A fifth preprint provides a genomic resource for desiccation tolerance: a haplotype-resolved, near telomere-to-telomere genome assembly for Vellozia tubiflora, containing 23,352 protein-coding genes in one haplotype and 23,549 in the other. Together with the fog plant study, it gives researchers reference points for how plants survive drying, at the genome level and at the population level. [cites: 1793207598128878244]

## What adaptation work should measure

Across these preprints, adaptation is not a single trait to be added. It is a set of relationships to be measured: which fungi actually colonize roots, which stomatal regulators respond in which genotype, which genomic variants track fog over time, and how deep roots actually draw water in the field. Interventions that skip those measurements, like soil inoculation that barely moves community composition, or monitoring that relies on soil DNA alone, risk looking active while changing little. [cites: 1793188466346662396, 1793188466346331933, 1793207598127860500, 1793226592599289997]

All five are preprints, and each comes from a specific system: afforestation plots, two tomato genotypes, one endangered plant, field phenotyping trials, and one desiccation-tolerant species. The pattern across them is suggestive rather than proven for any given farm or forest. The next step for each is the same: test whether the measured trait predicts survival and yield when the weather, not the experiment, sets the stress. [cites: 1793188466346662396, 1793207598127860500, 1793226592599289997]

## What is still unresolved

- Whether nursery-managed fungal communities improve long-term tree survival and carbon outcomes is not shown here.
- Whether tomato stomatal regulation differences translate into yield under field drought and heat is untested in this preprint.
- Whether fog-associated variants can guide conservation planting under changing fog regimes is not established.

## Decision card

- **Useful for:** Agriculture, forestry and conservation professionals tracking climate adaptation
- **Not for:** Readers looking for planting recommendations from preprint results
- **Compare against:** Soil DNA monitoring alone, single-trait breeding, and inoculation without root community checks
