- Qualitate closed a $25M Series A led by Insight Partners; CEO Sagar Kadakia says run rate grew 10x in nine months and net revenue retention hit 300%. (self-reported) [cites: 1792590478401739969]
- AT&T is working with OpenAI to build a knowledge layer for its in-house legal department, with a natural-language intake system that classifies and prioritizes requests; decision-making stays with the lawyers. (self-reported) [cites: 1792609268417210162]

- Harvey launched its Connector Library to general availability, integrating document management, data rooms, contract platforms and chat into its platform with custom MCP connectors and write-back into the DMS. (self-reported) [cites: 1792597960479542368]

## The money

Legal technology had a concentrated funding day on October 21. Legora announced a $550 million Series E at an $8.8 billion post-money valuation, led by Atreides Management. The company says it has surpassed $200 million in ARR, and that the second $100 million of that arrived in less than six months. [cites: 1792606874345295563]

The figures the companies report suggest buyers are standardizing, not experimenting. Legora says in-house legal teams made up more than 40% of its new customers in the third quarter, up from a small fraction a year earlier, and that more than half of the AmLaw 50 are customers. It reports more than 140,000 legal professionals across 2,400 organizations in over 80 markets, with more than 1,000 employees in 18 offices. [cites: 1792606874345295563]

## The GC is buying

The clearest demand signal came from the buy side. AT&T is working with OpenAI to build a knowledge layer for its in-house legal department: a natural-language intake system that would classify and prioritize legal requests, connect them with precedent, research and past work, and give lawyers historical context and recommended first steps. The project extends LegalEdge, AT&T's existing team applying AI to major legal matters, and the company keeps humans in charge. As David McAtee puts it: "The decision making will always remain with the lawyers." [cites: 1792609268417210162]

It is not only the largest legal departments. Harvey reports that mid-sized firms Munck Wilson Mandala, Gray Reed and Foley Hoag have each implemented its platform with firm-specific playbooks. Roughly half of Munck Wilson Mandala's nearly 100 lawyers hold STEM degrees, and the firm achieved more than 90% accuracy on a due diligence project. Gray Reed appointed litigation partner Skyler Stuckey as chief innovation officer after a year and a half of evaluating options. Foley Hoag rolled out to lawyers and business-services professionals in under a month, with more than 94% of lawyers adopting and over three-quarters of lawyers and staff using it weekly. [cites: 1792597960480752874]

The supporting product story is about infrastructure, not demos. Harvey's Playbook Builder turns a firm's existing standards and precedents into playbooks applied directly in Word, and its Connector Library - now generally available - brings document management systems, data rooms, contract platforms and email threads into the platform, with custom MCP connectors for internal systems and write-back into the DMS. Harvey's Vault lets lawyers compare contracts against executed agreements to spot outliers and extract fallback language from deals already signed. [cites: 1792597960479542368, 1792627425496423849]

## The operating playbook

Legora CEO Max Junestrand, speaking on the General Catalyst blog, described the discipline behind the growth. After a significant funding raise, the company stopped selling entirely from May to October 2024 rather than risk a failed demo in front of a prestigious firm's partner, because one broken prompt would destroy trust immediately. Since launch, he says, the company has roughly doubled revenue every quarter, and active users spend about an hour and a half a day in the product. [cites: 1792601430741697198]

The expert-network business is getting the same treatment. Qualitate CEO Sagar Kadakia, on the Pitch the PM podcast, said the company closed a $25 million Series A led by Insight Partners, grew its run rate 10x in nine months, and reached 300% net revenue retention. Its AI interviewers run 45- to 65-minute expert discussions with no human in the loop, grounded in proprietary research questions and a library of prior interview data, at what Kadakia says is about a third or a quarter of the price of traditional expert networks. He says a couple dozen hedge funds have moved large portions of their channel-check business onto the platform, and that the firm now runs 20 to 40 expert calls in a couple of business days. [cites: 1792590478401739969]

The acquisition market agrees. Newforma acquired Lumi AI and folded its agentic analytics into its project-management suite, with a buyer-side quality bar attached: Newforma requires AI that touches project decisions to meet three tests - answers must be explainable, verifiable against the source data, and accurate enough to act on. [cites: 1792615050235346763]

## Why it matters for VCs

Three patterns landed in a single day, and this is our read on what they mean. First, the capital is concentrating where the budgets already are: legal and finance, the two professional-services functions with both the pain and the procurement authority. Second, adoption is moving from pilots to policy - AT&T building a legal knowledge layer, mid-sized firms appointing innovation officers, Newforma demanding verifiability as a purchase condition. Third, the products winning are infrastructural: clause libraries built from signed deals, connector layers with write-back, agents grounded in proprietary transcripts. The next round of value in professional-services AI accrues to whoever owns the firm's institutional memory. [cites: 1792606874345295563, 1792609268417210162, 1792615050235346763, 1792627425496423849, 1792590478401739969]

## What is still unresolved

- Legora disclosed only the Q3 new-customer share for in-house teams, not the revenue mix between law firms and in-house departments.
- No disclosed financial terms for Newforma's acquisition of Lumi AI.
- AT&T disclosed no timeline or quantitative time-savings for its legal knowledge layer.
- Harvey's customer adoption figures are company-reported case studies, not independently verified.

## Decision card

- **Useful for:** VCs tracking legal-tech and professional-services AI deal flow; Founders selling AI into legal and finance functions; Enterprise buyers benchmarking AI adoption playbooks
- **Not for:** Investors seeking public-market entry points - all rounds cited are private; Readers wanting technical product-level detail
- **Compare against:** Harvey's growth trajectory against Legora's reported $200M-plus ARR; Qualitate's AI-interviewer unit economics against traditional expert networks

1. **Get a Synorb Key.** Click Generate Free Agent Key at https://synorb.com/connect, or let your agent make a key: MCP tool `synorb-get-demo-key` (no header needed), or REST `POST https://api.synorb.com/api/connect/demo-key` with a JSON body such as `{"client":"your-agent-name"}`. The key is the `api_key` field of the answer. Save the key. The 72 Hour Agent Demo key needs no email. It lasts 72 hours and can pull up to 25 Manifests. It includes 5 Beacons; 3 of them are starter Beacons.
2. **Read each cited Manifest by id.** REST: `GET https://api.synorb.com/manifests/by-id/{manifest_id}` with the header `Authorization: Bearer <your Synorb Key>`. Ids are strings; do not parse them as numbers. The reply holds the source, the Signal (claims) and the Brief.
3. **Check the claim.** Match each sentence in the story to the claims in the Manifest it cites. The claim ids in the ledger point to them.
