Modernizing Arctic Security
The United States, Denmark, and Greenland have updated their defense cooperation to strengthen security in the Arctic. For defense contractors and policy watchers, the agreement opens local procurement opportunities while establishing a new 'Golden Dome' defense system to secure the North Atlantic.[1][2]
Under the agreement signed on September 22, 2026, which amends the 1951 Defense Agreement, the US is authorized to modernize and expand its activities at Pituffik Space Base. The pact also allows the US to establish new Defense Areas at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig, alongside facilitating the 'Golden Dome' defense system.[3][4][5][1]
Local economic interests are built directly into the deal. The US must award contracts for constructing and maintaining these defense areas to Greenlandic sources to the maximum extent possible. Meanwhile, the agreement blocks non-NATO states from setting up military installations or gaining influence over sensitive sectors in Greenland.[2][6][7]
The agreement also secures long-term geopolitical alignment. If Greenland eventually chooses independence, it is required to remain in NATO and assume all obligations of the original 1951 Defense Agreement.[8]
